SAP FICO
INTRODUCTION
SAP FICO refers to Financial (FI) and Controlling
(CO). These two are the core modules of SAP. FI is used for external reporting
purpose whereas CO is used for the external reporting purpose. FICO module is
integrated with the other module of SAP which is Sales & Distributions (SD)
and Material Management (MM) module.
An overview of FI sub-modules
The sub-modules of FI contain various modules such as
Enterprise Structure, General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable,
Bank Accounting and Assert Accounting.
ENTERPRISE STRUCTURE
It is an organizational structure that represents the
enterprise in the SAP system and it is a portrayal of an enterprise hierarchy that
comprises of ‘Client’, ‘Company’, ‘Company Code’, ‘Business Area’ and the
‘Functional Areas’. Let’s have a brief discussion about all of these.
COMPANY
· It is the smallest organizational unit where financial
statements of individuals are drawn as per the appropriate commercial law. In
SAP, a group unit is called ‘Company’.
· Company is consisting of one or more company codes where it
is mandatory for all the company codes to use the same COA & the same
fiscal year within a company.
COMPANY CODE
· Company code is a unit of financial accounting
where a complete set of accounts is drawn for the purpose of the external
reporting.
· Company code keeps the record of all the
relevant transactions and generates all the supporting documents which are
required for the financial statements.
BUSINESS AREA
· For business areas, financial statements can be
created easily where you can use these statements for several reporting
purposes.
CREDIT CONTROL AREA
· It is an area of the organizational entity that
grants & monitors the credit limit for customers. The credit-control area
includes one or more company codes.
· Credit control area is used for the payment
purpose on account to credit the respective payments.
There are different types of the variant in Financial
Accounting in global settings such as ‘Fiscal Year Variant’, ‘Posting
Periods Variant’, ‘Field Status Variant’ and many more.
·
Fiscal Year Variant- Fiscal year variant is used to define
the ‘Fiscal Year’. The fiscal year is just as it is used for the company code.
·
Posting Periods Variant- Every posted transaction is assigned
to a particular posting period. Transactional figures are updated for a period
within the fiscal years and each company code is referred to one variant only.
·
Field Status Variant- It is a group of several field status
groups where it specifies which field is required either optional or
suppressed.
So it is pretty obvious now that
SAP FICO is indeed one of the core modules of SAP and as a career option it
would be a great choice.
